Situated along Interstate 90 and easy to reach from other parts of Montana, Deer Lodge is a lovingly restored town that boasts plenty of western history and enough outdoor fun to keep the whole family busy for days.
A good first stop in the downtown area is the Montana State Prison. While that may seem like an unusual place to visit, those who travel to Deer Lodge proclaim it to be one of the town's best attractions. While the current prison still functions as such, the old one on Main Street is now an interesting law enforcement museum. A host of other museums also make for an interesting visit. They include the Frontier Montana Museum, the Montana Auto Museum, and the Powell County Museum.
If you prefer, however, to spend your time outdoors, there are lots of options from which to choose. First, consider a visit to the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, a fascinating attraction dedicated to dispensing information and education on the frontier cattle ranching era.
Of course, fly fishing around Deer Lodge, MT is excellent and local outfitters can offer information on what you can catch and where. There are also abundant opportunities for hiking, biking, golfing, and watersports, such as canoeing and kayaking.
